The Month in Review
May, 1999

May was an active month at RETLIF TESTING LABORATORIES with the continued expansion of services, accreditations and industry initiatives.

RETLIF TO HOST LOCAL IEEE MEETING

RETLIF will be hosting the Long Island IEEE EMC Society’s June meeting at our Ronkonkoma headquarters. The meeting is scheduled for June 15th and will feature two presentations. Mr. Jan M. Van Der Poel of the Fair-Rite Corp. will discuss design considerations when using ferrites for EMI suppression. He will also discuss the characteristics and uses of several new ferrite products which Fair-Rite will be introducing.

The second presentation will be given by Mr. Richard Reitz, RETLIF’s Corporate Laboratory Manager. Richard’s presentation will address recent developments in the product approval processes for both the FCC and the European Union related to both EMC and Product Safety issues.

RETLIF "Competent Body" STATUS UPDATE

Several developments have taken place over the past few weeks related to RETLIF’s designation as an EU Conformity Assessment Body (i.e. Competent Body). In an April 8th letter from N.I.S.T. RETLIF was notified that N.I.S.T.’s designation of RETLIF as a Conformity Assessment Body related to the EMC Directive has been "validated" by the European Union and, quoting from the letter; "…….You may now conduct tests during the "transition period" as described in the U.S./E.C. Mutual Recognition Agreement".

In an additional, May 28th letter, N.I.S.T. informed RETLIF that it had reviewed our submitted information and has nominated us as a Conformity Assessment Body for Radio Transmitters. Once accepted by the E.U. this would allow for testing by RETLIF IN ACCORDANCE WITH Article 10(5) of the EMC Directive.

EXPANSION OF NH FACILITY

Responding to a growing workload, construction will begin this summer on the expansion of the NH facility. Plans call for a 1,000 sq. ft. addition to be installed at the facility. The added space will be used for improved file, equipment and test sample storage and handling as well as the potential addition of some limited Environmental Simulation testing capabilities.
