Retlif Receives NIST Contract For Body Armor Testing Protocol Development

Dec 13, 2007

Retlif is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a contract from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the development of an "artifical aging" testing protocol for body armor. The program calls for the development of a test method that would combine the effects of temperature and humidity on body armor while it is tumbling to also introduce the effects of wear during the testing cycle. In addition to helping define the test specification, Retlif will also be developing the "mechanical tumbling device" to be used during testing.

Commenting on this contract, Scott Poggi, Retlif's Project Manager for this effort and Environmental Simulation Laboratory Manager stated, "What this means is that the federal government recognizes and wants to address the issue of material fatigue over time in body armor".

It is expected that this project will be completed in the second quarter of 2008, after which production lot testing will begin.
